When it comes to wireless technology, many network administrators just stay at the point of ease of deployment and management. They may also stand at the level where wireless network technology can help enterprises reduce the cost of information management. The author has assisted many companies to implement wireless networks, and found that wireless networks not only bring convenience to our network managers in maintenance and deployment, but the greater value lies in the ability to help companies reduce management costs.
Case 1: Improve harvesting efficiency and reduce corporate receivers
When the author’s company did not deploy a wireless network before, receiving goods was a very troublesome thing. The receiving staff first counts on the spot, and then signs on the receipt. Then take the recorded content to the warehouse clerk for them to input into the system. Obviously, there is a lot of repetitive work in the process, which wastes a lot of labor and time. Later, the deputy in charge of warehouse management determined to deal with this problem. His initial idea is to optimize the warehouse receiving process and streamline warehouse management staff. After many discussions, the company initially decided on a solution. That is, a small wireless network is implemented in the warehouse, and a laptop computer is provided for the warehouse staff. Realize on-site points and on-site entry system. Instead of making a written record now, then go back and enter the system again. It didn’t take long for this plan to be implemented, and it worked very well. Not only the accuracy of receiving goods is improved, but also the cost of enterprise warehouse management is reduced. The most obvious effect is that the number of warehouse management personnel has been reduced from 12 to 10 now. Later, the company implemented bar code management, and all products that were first put into the warehouse were managed by bar codes, which further reduced the workload of warehouse personnel.
It can be seen that because the wireless network is not bound by the network cable, it conforms to the characteristics of the warehouse personnel’s unfixed receiving site. Warehouse personnel can take laptops with wireless capabilities to various locations to receive goods. And save the trouble of the middleman. If the company adds bar code and other management when receiving the goods, it will be able to get twice the result with half the effort. Therefore, wireless networks can indeed reduce the cost of enterprise warehouse management. At least from this case, it can be seen that wireless network technology can reduce the workload of warehouse personnel and make a certain contribution to the fine-editing of warehouse personnel by enterprises.
Case 2: Reduce printing expenses and realize paperless office
Before enterprises deployed wireless networks, printers were busiest when they had regular meetings. Because most employees of the company need to print out the content of the meeting. But these printed content will become waste paper after the meeting is over, and there is not much use. According to the author’s incomplete statistics, the cost (including toner and paper, not including the depreciation cost of the printer) for printing the content of the meeting each time accounts for one-third of the entire printing expenditure. If this part of the expenditure can be reduced, then it will be able to bring a lot of value to the enterprise.
In fact, the use of this wireless network to reduce printing and other expenses was discovered by the author inadvertently. After the wireless network was implemented in the enterprise at that time, especially after the deployment of wireless network launch points in the meeting room at the request of the employees, the author found that the printing expenses in the following months were gradually reduced. The author discovered through observation that many employees no longer print meeting materials between meetings. Instead, take the laptop to the meeting room indirectly, and use the laptop to connect to the company’s file server or OA server through the wireless network to open the relevant files for the meeting. And the content of the development will be indirectly reflected in the OA system. In this case, there is no need to have information flying every time you have a meeting. This unexpected harvest makes business managers very happy. According to the forecast of the author and the financial department, it only takes one and a half years for the whole trend to develop. This saved expenditure can make up for the company's purchase of laptops (in order to deploy wireless networks, the company has purchased Centrino Technology laptops) and wireless router expenditures.
Indeed, companies continue to advocate the realization of paperless office and reduce corporate office expenses. However, there are many difficulties in achieving this. On the contrary, with the popularization of information office, employees are unwilling to write the content of the meeting manually. Use the printing method to print the required document content at every turn. This has increased the expense of office expenses. Now, through wireless network technology, each department manager can connect to the enterprise’s server to grab the content they need in any place (such as a corporate conference room or meeting room) through a wireless network. Can indirectly use the laptop to give presentations to customers or other employees without the need to use written paper documents. In this case, the company’s office expenses can be greatly reduced. The company successfully deployed a wireless network in October 2008. At that time, the company’s office expenses (costs related to information management, including printing and other expenses) seemed to be around 40,000 yuan. By March 2009, this fee had dropped to a little over 30,000. The notebook can save 10,000 yuan each month, which is enough to buy two laptops. According to the author’s observation, this is mainly due to the lack of printing, so the toner can be saved a lot (color toner is very expensive). And if the number of prints is small, the maintenance cost of the printer can also be greatly reduced. Due to the drastic drop in printing demand, companies have decided to reduce the number of printers. After some printers are scrapped, no new printers will be purchased, which in turn can help companies save a lot of money.
It can be seen that wireless network technology can get rid of the constraints of space, thereby reducing printing expenditures and achieving paperless office to a certain extent. Thereby reducing the production and management costs of the enterprise. Therefore, I believe that wireless network technology is not only about the convenience of management. If the network administrator deploys it well, it can also help companies reduce costs and increase profits.
Case 3: Reduce network deployment costs
The author’s enterprise has established a new foreign trade company due to export needs. In fact, this foreign trade company is a department, in the same office building as the company. The company transformed an original sample room into one of their offices. However, a problem was encountered during network deployment. Because the original sample room has been renovated, the floor tiles have been deployed. At that time, this office was intended to be used as a sample room, so there was no network interface reserved enough. This sample room of more than 30 square meters has only one network interface. Now this sample room needs to be transformed into an office of a foreign trade company, and it is necessary to allow 7 employees to access the Internet at the same time. How should this be done? If the network is redeployed, then a large amount of expenditure will be required. Because the enterprise sub-manager disagrees with the deployment of open wires. Because the office of a foreign trade company sometimes needs to receive customers, if the open wire is used, the generality of the company will be destroyed. And if the floor tiles are to be dug out and re-wired, then this expense is hard to say. It is necessary to consider the general problems of the office and control the cost of network deployment. In the end, the author had to use a wireless network to achieve this.
The author deployed a wireless router in that unique network interface and bought laptops with wireless network cards for employees of foreign trade companies. Fortunately, this laptop is now cheap. If it is used for office use, it can cost around 4,000 yuan. Even if you buy a desktop computer, you still need 3,000 yuan each. The author has roughly analyzed that if you buy a laptop, each one is 1,000 yuan more expensive than a desktop computer, and if there are 7 computers, it is about 7,000 more expensive. And if the floor tiles of this office are dug out and redecorated, the decoration company’s offer is 8,000 yuan. This cost alone is 1,000 yuan less than the enterprise’s implementation of a wireless network.
When an enterprise needs to adjust the layout of the office due to work needs, and the reserved network interface cannot meet the needs of normal office work, the network administrator is faced with a test. Either sacrifice the office's general layout with open wires; or re-modify the ground to use dark wires; or use limited network interfaces to implement wireless networks. According to the author's experience, the open-wire layout is the most cost-effective, but it will cause greater damage to the office environment; although a large amount of investment is required for wireless network deployment, it can ensure that the office environment is not affected in the slightest. It is most unwise to redecorate and wire the office, unless the office is in dilapidated condition and needs to be redecorated. It can be seen that wireless network technology can also reduce the cost of enterprise network deployment, thereby indirectly assisting enterprises to save management costs.
