Samsung wins Tesla order: to build a new in-vehicle computer chip

Recently, according to foreign media reports, Samsung has begun to produce on-board computer chips for Tesla's advanced driver assistance system FSD, and is beginning to develop new on-board computer products for the autonomous vehicle and autonomous vehicle markets.

In September of this year, a person familiar with the matter revealed to the media that Tesla and Samsung’s foundry departments have been designing and developing samples for chips since the beginning of this year. In the end, Tesla decided to outsource the production of HW 4.0 autopilot chips to Samsung.

Samsung plans to use 7nm process technology to produce HW4.0 chips for Tesla at its factory in Hwaseong, South Korea.

It is reported that 7nm is not Samsung’s current most advanced chip manufacturing process. Samsung Electronics has achieved 5nm in the current process, but the current 5nm is not as good as 7nm whether it is mass production or performance stability. Therefore, in order to ensure a higher yield and stability after installation in the car, Samsung chose the 7nm process.

According to South Korean media reports, Samsung will also provide Tesla with five other chips, three of which are specifically for audio and video systems. They are 256GB PCle Gen3 NVMe solid state drives (SSD), 2GB GDDR6 graphics DRAM and 2GB DDR4 DRAM; The other two are used for autonomous driving. They are 2GB GDDR6 graphics DRAM and 128GB Universal Flash Storage (UFS).

In addition, the mass production version of Tesla’s electric pickup Cybertruck will be unveiled together with the HW4.0 in-vehicle computer, which means that Cybertruck will be equipped with HW4.0 autonomous driving hardware. In the future, Tesla models such as Model 3 and Model Y may also be equipped with new computer chips.
