ROHM: Focus on power and analog semiconductor innovation, strengthen overseas market expansion

[Editor’s note]In 2021, the realization of the “dual carbon” goal will have a huge impact on the economy and technology. As an important foundation of Electronic information technology, the integrated circuit industry naturally cannot be a bystander in the realization of the “dual carbon” goal. In the past year, what challenges and opportunities did the “Double Carbon Goal” bring to the integrated circuit industry? Which areas are expected to achieve rapid growth? What are the layouts of major manufacturers in the semiconductor industry chain for the new “dual carbon” track? A few days ago, Rohm Semiconductor (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. Chairman Leita Fujimura introduced Rohm's initiatives in carbon neutrality and the company's future development strategy.

Strong demand will continue in 2022

Looking back on the past, the new crown pneumonia epidemic has also had a huge impact on the overall supply chain of the electronics industry, and economic activities have temporarily stagnated. However, after the fall of 2020, due to the recovery of the automotive market, demand has begun to recover. Nowadays, semiconductors and electronic components are widely used. Supply and demand in the field are in a state of distress. In addition, the electronics industry solves various social problems through continuous innovation, and semiconductors are playing an increasingly important role. Judging from this trend, we believe that although the current strong demand in 2022 will continue, even in the event of huge environmental changes, it does not have to be affected by short-term market trends and requires a long-term perspective to promote measures.

Focus on power and analog technology

In the automotive and industrial equipment markets, ROHM is advancing technological innovations to reduce environmental impact and pursue safety in various market areas. As one of the key components for achieving zero carbon and energy saving, Rohm's main products-power and analog semiconductors are playing an increasingly important role, especially the efficiency improvement of “motors” and “power supplies”, which account for more than half of the world’s electricity consumption. Is our great mission. Under such circumstances, in order to clarify the direction, in 2020 ROHM formulated the business vision of "focusing on power supply and analog technology, and solving social problems by satisfying customers' needs for "energy saving" and "miniaturization". . While clarifying the way forward, it also raises the awareness of all employees of the group, thereby further increasing the company’s social contribution.

Strategy and Vision for 2022

In May 2021, ROHM released the first medium-term management plan “MOVING FORWARD to 2025”. This mid-term management plan is to realize ROHM’s target image and business philosophy in 10 years, and clarify the plan for the next five years. The operating policy and business strategy remain unchanged, and the specific business development strategy is promoted along the three axes of “growth”, “development” and “creation”.

“Growth” refers to the development of the current key product groups-power components and automotive ICs as the center business. “Development” means to further strengthen the profitability of general goods and IC products used in consumer electronics, promote high value-added products and overseas transfer, and seek qualitative conversion of business. “Creation” refers to the establishment of new business development that is further oriented to the future five years later, and actively promotes research and development and CVC activities.

On the basis of realizing business development, overseas markets are very important. As the cornerstone of overseas development, in the IC business, PME engineers familiar with customer issues will do product planning to build a global product development system.

In addition, we will also strengthen the cooperation between the solution and technical support department and sales to effectively meet the needs of customers. Re-examine the system that has always been centered on the Japanese market, and actively expand the system for proposal, sales support, and promotion of highly versatile product development (ASSP) and solutions in order to acquire customers in overseas markets.

In addition, we will strengthen agent distribution and digital marketing in overseas markets, and while exploring potential customers, we will effectively improve the efficiency of the logistics management system including overseas sales companies and warehouses, and strengthen the development and promotion of products in the field of industrial equipment.

In the power field, with SiC-core devices contributing to energy conservation and environmental protection, it is also proposing solutions including peripheral components such as drive control ICs (gate drivers) and power discrete devices. And rich technical support, in addition to providing evaluation and simulation tools, but also to develop a joint laboratory (Power Lab) with users to accelerate partnerships.

In terms of products, the 1200V fourth-generation SiC MOSFET has been adopted by many customers due to its excellent performance. In the future, we will continue to cooperate with automobile manufacturers and vehicle manufacturers to provide a wealth of solutions while advancing the development of more efficient and higher-quality products.

In order to meet the ever-expanding demand for silicon carbide products, ROHM has built a new plant at the Apollo Chikugo Plant in Japan, and will begin mass production in the new plant in 2022, and plans to increase the production capacity of devices by more than 5 times. The new plant will be equipped with production equipment incorporating various energy-saving technologies and will use 100% renewable energy to generate electricity. It is a brand-new environmentally-friendly plant. At the same time, the SiC wafer manufacturer SiCrystal GmbH (Germany) plant under the ROHM Group will also start production with 100% renewable energy utilization in 2021. These measures will make the main production processes of SiC wafers all become environmentally friendly production systems using renewable energy.

These are based on the “Environmental Vision 2050” designated in April 2021. The vision takes “climate change”, “resource recycling” and “symbiosis with nature” as the three main themes, and strives to achieve zero carbon (CO2Net zero emissions) and zero emissions.

In the future, ROHM will continue to promote technological innovation in power and analog semiconductors, one of the key products to improve efficiency, in accordance with its corporate philosophy and business vision. At the same time, it will also respond to climate change and actively carry out resource recycling in accordance with the environmental vision formulated this time. Use various environmental protection activities such as symbiosis with nature and environmental investment to contribute to the sustainable development of society.
